Are you getting married and looking for a floral hairstyle? Are you attending a wedding and want to add flowers to your hair but aren’t sure where to start?
In this article, I will answer your questions.
As a florist specializing in events, I often receive questions from future brides about how to adorn their hair with flowers on the big day. In this article, I will share my expertise so that you can choose the best way to decorate your hair for the occasion.
To incorporate flowers into your hairstyle, the first step is to choose flowers that complement your face shape and hair type. If you have a slender face and/or short hair, opt for smaller flowers like Waxflowers, petite Spray Roses, or Baby’s Breath. Conversely, if your features are broader and/or you have thick or long hair, you can go for larger blooms such as Roses, Dahlias, or Ranunculus. You can attach these flowers in small bunches, on a comb, a headband, or even a flower crown to beautifully enhance your floral hairstyle.

How to Choose a Flower (or Several) for Your Hair?
Whether you’re getting married or attending a wedding, it’s a perfect opportunity to adorn your hair with flowers. It may seem complicated at first, but it’s actually quite simple.
In the following lines, I’m going to explain how to choose the right flower to wear in your hair for a wedding.
A Rustic and Romantic Trend 👰
In recent years, we have seen new trends emerge in the event industry.
This is particularly true for the chic country style, which brings back everything that is natural, delicate, and light.
We’ve also seen a resurgence of everything that is bohemian, hippie, and romantic.
One commonality among all these trends is the essential role of flowers at the heart of event decoration.
They are no longer just found in the bride’s bouquet: they are everywhere!
Decorating a wedding today means planning not only the bride’s bouquet but also table centerpieces, car decorations, a floral arch… and let’s not forget the hairstyles of the bride and her guests!
On this occasion, many brides-to-be want to match their outfits with those of their bridesmaids by wearing the same flowers in their hair. This also helps create beautiful photos!

Choosing a Flower That Suits Your Face
When choosing a flower to wear in your hair, it’s important to consider a few key factors:
➡️ If your face is narrow and/or slender
If your body type is more slender and delicate, it’s wise to lean towards mostly small flowers. There are particularly small, branching roses that are more delicate than the large roses we often picture when we think of this flower.
This face shape will be accentuated by baby’s breath (Gypsophila, Wax) and delicate foliage such as mastic or elongated eucalyptus.
➡️ If your face is more angular/wide/round
In this case, you can embrace bigger flowers that will beautifully enhance your features.
Oversized flower crowns, for example, will look stunning on you. You can also mix small flowers with larger blooms if you prefer a more subtle floral accessory.

Choosing a Flower That Suits Your Hair
Your hairstyle and hair type can also guide your choice of flowers.
➡️ For Thick, Curly, and/or Long Hair
In this situation, feel free to go for bold flowers for maximum impact! This also works well if your hairstyle is voluminous, like a messy bun, for example.
➡️ For Short or Fine Hair
If your hair is very short or fine and you want your hairstyle to remain subtle and elegant, you can choose small flowers or dried flowers.
If you really want to wear a big flower, that’s certainly possible, but I recommend using only one or two, placed harmoniously in your hair.
What type of flower is suitable for wearing in your hair?
Now that you know how to choose which type of flower to use in your hairstyle, I’d like to offer you a small list of flowers that will maintain their beauty throughout your wedding day.
❕ Indeed, some delicate flowers cannot be used for fresh flower hairstyles because they won’t last long outside of water. In this case, you can opt for dried flowers or artificial flowers if you are determined to wear those flowers in your hair.
Little Flowers or Tiny Blossoms 💐
These little flowers are particularly well-suited for hairstyles:
- Wax Flower
- Baby’s Breath
- Chamomile
- Kalanchoe Flowers (glued only, on combs or barrettes)
- Lianthus Buds
- Mini Eden Spray Roses
- Small Hydrangea Blooms
- Statice (fresh or dried)
- Limonium
- Freesia
Gypsophila / Hydrangea / Lisianthus
Bigger Flowers 🌼
Here is a non-exhaustive selection of larger flowers for your hairstyles:
- Peony (preferably the smaller ones)
- Dahlia
- Rose
- Chrysanthemum (Varieties: Santini, Alvéolé, Anastasia)
- Gerbera
- Buttercup (winter, spring)
- Anemone (winter, spring)
- Craspedia
- Thistle
Pink / Ranunculus / Thistle / Dahlia
What about the foliage? 🌿
The foliage is an important element that shouldn’t be overlooked, as it enhances the flowers. It should be durable and sturdy enough to be worn in the hair.
Here are some examples of plants that are great for hairstyles: Eucalyptus, Mastic, Pittosporum, Ivy, and more.
Some Flower Ideas Based on Your Wedding Theme
Now that you understand the basics of selecting the right flowers for your hairstyle, I will propose a selection of 4 flowers that align with the current major wedding trends and complement the style you are looking for.
For a Rustic Wedding 🌾
This type of wedding emphasizes flowers in their natural state, just like you might find them in the fields.
They should be chosen in pastel shades: lavender, soft pink, light green, pale yellow…
Hair should be left as natural as possible or styled in a loose, relaxed way.
Here is a small selection of wildflowers:
- The Thistle
- The Wax Flower
- The Lisianthus
- The Statice

For a Romantic Bohemian Wedding 🌸
This type of decor emphasizes generous decorations, featuring large, bold flowers.
The color scheme for this trend is based on a range of pinks that goes from cream white to dark pink.
To embrace this style, you can choose:
- Mini-Eden type bush roses
- Baby’s breath
- Small hydrangea blooms
- White button chrysanthemums

For an Exotic Wedding 🌴
If you’re attending an exotic wedding, it’s the perfect opportunity to embrace vivid colors! You can also go for bold floral designs reminiscent of Tahitian crowns.
✔️ If you’re having this type of hairstyle done by a florist, I recommend placing your order at least ten days in advance so they can source the flowers.
For a lush and colorful hairstyle, you can choose:
- Colorful Lilies
- Anthuriums (preferably small)
- Orchids, choose based on your favorite variety: Vanda, Phalaenopsis, Cambria…
- Plumeria flowers

How to Attach Flowers in Your Hair?
After reviewing the selection of flowers to include in your hairstyle, I’ll discuss the main techniques available for securing them in your hair.
Small Bouquets to Pair with a Hair Clip
This is the simplest and most discreet solution: it is particularly suitable for guests and bridesmaids, so as not to overshadow the bride. It’s also important to have medium to long hair in order to hide the attachment of the flowers.
The goal is to create the impression that the flowers are naturally woven into your hair. The result should be delicate and light: it’s all about adding a subtle floral touch to your hairstyle that is by no means overwhelming.
For this, you can ask your florist to create very small bouquets with one or two flowers, about the size of a child’s boutonniere.
It’s important to let them know that this is meant to be attached to your hair, so they should use a professional tape called floral tape to secure the flowers together.
You can then secure the flowers yourself with a clip or ask your hairstylist for help.

Using a Comb: A Simple and Stylish Solution
The comb is an accessory that helps achieve a refined hairstyle. It can be quite understated or a bit more pronounced, and is generally suited for long to medium-length hair.
It is particularly well-suited for adorning a low bun, placed above it. It also adds a decorative touch to a braid or a ponytail, giving these trendy hairstyles a more polished look.
The comb is perfect for hairstyles adorned with dried flowers: simply use a hot glue gun to attach the dried flowers to the comb before placing it in your hair.

The Headband: Easy to Wear with Any Hairstyle
This classic hairstyle has the advantage of being suitable for all hair lengths.
The headband can be completely adorned with flowers for a “flower crown” effect, or it can simply feature a floral detail. This hairstyle also allows for mixing flowers with pearls.
All the elements placed on a headband should be glued to it, using hot glue for beads and dried plants, while fresh flowers and greenery should be attached with cold glue.
Of course, you can ask your florist to create a floral headband for you if you prefer not to make one yourself. You can also order artificial flower headbands online.

The Flower Crown: Elevate Your Hairstyle
This hairstyle will showcase the flowers you choose to wear in your hair the best.
Perfect for making you the queen of the day, it suits all hair lengths and most hairstyles.
It is easy to put on and is suitable even for little girls and babies.
If you’re looking for a subtle flower crown that won’t overshadow the bride’s, consider opting for a delicate crown made with small blossoms.
Do you want to keep a wedding memento or wear your flower crown again for a special occasion? We offer a selection of beautiful artificial flower crowns that look just like fresh flower crowns, but can be preserved and worn for years to come.
Now that you’ve mastered everything you need to know about choosing which flower to put in your hair, it’s time to pick your hairstyle for that special day! 👸
