Do you have a beautiful bud vase and are wondering which flower to put in it? Are you looking to decorate your home with bud vases?
I will help you.
As a florist, I almost daily find myself advising my clients on how to choose a suitable bouquet for a vase they want to buy or one they already have at home.
Today, I’m excited to share my insights on this topic, particularly focusing on single-stem vases, so you can also decorate your home or an event with these stylish little vases that are all the rage.
A soliflore is a vase designed to hold a single large flower (like a Peony, Rose, or Lily) or several small blooms (such as wildflowers or dried flowers). You can also use it to display a flowering branch or some greenery for a different touch! In terms of decoration, soliflores are very versatile: on their own, they showcase a single flower and add an elegant detail to your interior. When combined in mismatched arrangements or with a harmonious mix of different flowers, they create trendy decor for your gatherings and weddings.

What is a flower vase?
The word “soliflore” comes from the Latin solus, which means “alone,” and flos, which means “flower.” It originally referred to a vase with a narrow neck, designed to hold only a single flower!
With the trends of boho-chic and rustic style, single flower vases are making a comeback! Whether for photo shoots or wedding decorations, these little vases are popping up on tables everywhere. However, in this context, what defines them is not as strict as it used to be.
For example, you can use repurposed glass bottles, vintage vases that you’ve found, or even a DIY decoration made from test tubes as soliflores!
A single flower vase, nowadays, is a repurposed vase or container that can hold, depending on your choice:
✅ An impressive flower,
✅ Little flowers,
✅ Any other decor that enhances it.

What should you do before placing a flower in a vase?
To make it as simple as possible, I’ve summarized in 4 steps what you need to do before putting a flower in a vase:
1. Remove the leaves from the bottom of the stem up to two-thirds of the height.
➡️ This will prevent the growth of bacteria in the water.
➡️ This helps the flower absorb water more easily.
3. Fill a clean vase with fresh water (but not cold).
➡️ Bulb flowers like Tulips, Lilies, and Amaryllis require very little water at the bottom of the vase.
4. Arrange your flowers in the vase, making sure they are not too crowded and that their stems are properly submerged in the water.
Following these tips will provide your flowers with the best possible environment to regain their strength in the water and stay fresh for a long time!

- Change the water every 48 hours and trim the stems if necessary.
- Keep your vase away from any source of heat and pollution (such as smoke or cigarettes).
- Place it in the shade and avoid direct sunlight on the flowers at all costs!

A Trendy Alternative: Putting Something Other Than Flowers in Your Vase
Are you looking for a natural decor that stands out from the ordinary? If so, you should know that you don’t have to rely on fresh flowers in water.
Dried Flowers: A Bohemian Touch 🌻
Trendy and easy to maintain, dried flowers like everlastings, lavender, and statice are perfect for decorating your flower vases, especially for events like weddings, or to enhance your home decor.
Add foliage or flowering branches for a rustic touch 🌿
A glass or ceramic vase will be beautifully complemented by simple greenery (Eucalyptus, Ruscus, etc.) or by a fruit tree branch picked in the spring while it’s in bloom. You’ll be able to watch it continue to blossom every day, making it a very poetic decoration!
Monstera / Eucalyptus / Flowering Branch
Recreate an Exotic Jungle with Monstera Leaves
Finally, you can add a simple Monstera leaf to your vase for a touch of exotic decor.
👉 I recommend cutting your Monstera just below a node before placing it in the vase. This way, it will definitely become a cutting 🌱, and you can either give it away or replant it once the roots are well developed!
How to Create Your Floral Decor with One or More Vases?
Now that you know which flowers you’re going to put in your vase or vases, it’s time to get to the arrangement!
If You Have Just One Flower Vase
In this case, you can place it on a small shelf or on a cut log. The key is to showcase your vase: feel free to create a decorative arrangement around it, using rose petals, or even pair it with an everlasting rose!

If You Have Multiple Bud Vases
With several small vases, you can create a super trendy decoration for your home or even for an event. To do this, just follow these few tips and make them your own to design a decor that reflects your style:
- Mix the containers. Choose mismatched but complementary vases that, when grouped together, will create a harmonious and colorful display.
- When using fewer than 10 vases, always opt for an odd number to make arranging them easier.
- Pair larger flower vases with those that hold smaller blooms, foliage, or branches. The idea is to recreate the visual effect of a bouquet, but in a more relaxed and unstructured way.
- Although varied, your flowers should blend together seamlessly: select complementary shades while considering the types of flowers (exotic, wildflower, classic…) to maintain some unity.
