Why Use a Plant Pot Holder?

With the trend of indoor plants, we’ve seen an influx of various types of planters in home decor stores, made from materials like rope, wood, or ceramic. But what is the purpose of such an item?

A Very Handy Accessory

Whether it’s a planter or a ceramic pot, a plant cover allows you to hide the water catchment tray that goes underneath your plant. If it’s waterproof, it can even serve as a catchment device to prevent flooding!

👉 Most houseplants do not tolerate having their roots sitting in water very well. To prevent this, feel free to place some clay pebbles at the bottom of your pot or saucer. This will also help maintain a high level of humidity around your plants!

Additionally, if you combine plant stands of varying heights, you can save a lot of space and create a very harmonious decorative arrangement. This way, you can easily recreate a small indoor garden using several matching containers!

A Super Trendy Decor Item

Have you started building a small indoor plant collection? This is the perfect opportunity to choose some planters to enhance them and create a green space that reflects your style. For instance, you could opt for a bohemian decor, using materials like rope, macramé, or rattan.

To create a cohesive look, choose containers that match the color scheme of your other furniture.

How to Make a Rope Plant Pot Cover?

This type of container is very easy to make and fits beautifully into a bohemian or hippie-chic decor. In fact, rope is a natural material that highlights a plant without creating too harsh of a contrast.

In the following lines, I will guide you on how to proceed.

Equipment to Prepare

To create a rope planter cover, you will need:

  • some rough cord of varying thickness, in sufficient quantity,

Plan for about 2 meters of space for a pot with an 8-centimeter diameter, 5 meters for a 16-centimeter pot, and 10 meters for a large pot over 26 centimeters in diameter.

  • A finer jute string or some colored cotton for finishing touches,
  • A container, whether it’s your flower pot itself or a ceramic, plastic, or glass vessel that holds your pot,
  • A hot glue gun with several glue sticks,
  • A pencil and an eraser,
  • Some easily removable tape or masking tape.

How to Secure the Rope to the Flower Pot?

To start, it’s important to set up on a clean and clear work surface.

Next, you can proceed as follows:

➡️ Plug in your glue gun so it can heat up while you prepare your container.

➡️ Depending on the material of the container you’ve chosen, mark the area where you want to wrap the cord, either using a pencil or some adhesive tape.

➡️ Next, unroll the rope and wrap it around your plant pot to make sure you have enough length to create your decoration.

➡️ Before you start gluing, secure the end of your rope by wrapping it with a cotton thread and tying it tightly. You can vary the thickness and even create patterns. The goal is to prevent the end of the rope from fraying!

➡️ Once you’ve done this, you can begin to gently apply the glue directly to your container using the glue gun. Work in sections of about 2 to 4 inches, then press the cord onto the glue before it hardens.

➡️ Before finishing, repeat the procedure with the cotton thread on the other end of the rope, and then glue everything in place.

The game is on!

How to Make a Fabric Plant Pot Cover

Unlike the rope plant pot cover, the fabric one requires some sewing skills and a sewing machine.

👉 However, if you don’t have this equipment, you can also simply glue fabric directly onto your container using a suitable craft adhesive purchased from a craft store or online. In this case, proceed as you would for a rope pot cover. You can even consider finishing your fabric pot cover with rope elements, which you can attach in such a way that they hide the edges of the fabric.

For those who want to try making a fabric pot cover, here’s a detailed video 🎞️ that explains how to do it:

As you can see, this method takes a bit more time, but it allows you to create stunning containers for your plants. If you have a collection of small plants, such as succulents or cacti, you can highlight them by choosing fabrics with matching patterns and colors.

Build a Terrarium

Designed as small miniature gardens, terrariums are easy to maintain and showcase your plants while keeping them safe from children and pets.

You can make one yourself easily in a glass container. To do this, place a layer of about 3 centimeters of clay balls or pebbles at the bottom of your container, then cover it with soil in which you can plant your plants. Feel free to decorate it with a string of battery-operated lights so you can enjoy it every evening at dusk!
