A Trendy Floral Arrangement

Made popular by the bohemian chic trend, the flower crown is worn on the head like a true crown. It works well for both short and long hair, and can be styled in various ways:

  • At the front of your head, to highlight your face
  • At the back of your head, particularly on an updo, to create an elegant detail that is visible from behind

This floral arrangement can be made with fresh, dried, or preserved flowers. The latter, also known as everlasting flowers, have the special quality of not wilting and can last for years. If you want to learn more, feel free to check out our selection of everlasting roses. 🌹

πŸ‘‰ If you’d like, you can also create a floral crown by using just small leaves or even grasses.

Flower crowns can be worn by women, as well as little girls and babies. Just adjust the headband to fit the person wearing it.

What Equipment Do You Need to Prepare?

To create a flower crown, you’ll need to gather some specific materials.

You can usually find all of this at a garden center, a craft store, a florist, or even online.

Here’s a short list of the materials you’ll need to prepare.

Pruners and/or Shears

The pruning shears allow you to cut the stems of plants, especially the woody ones.

The all-purpose cutter allows for more precise and delicate work, but it is not necessary to have one.

Flora Tape

This is a stretchable tape used by florists, specifically designed to secure plants together.

This will allow you to cover the stems of the flowers and secure them to the structure of your wreath. Since it is coated with paraffin, it prevents the stems from slipping and ensures the overall stability.

You can find it online by searching for “Floratape” or “floral tape” in a search engine.

Scissors

They are used to trim thin stems as well as the Floratape. They should be well-sharpened.

Ribbon

This will help you secure your crown and keep it in place. So make sure it matches your choice of flowers.

2 mm Diameter Aluminum Wire

Easy to mold, it will allow you to create the structure of your crown. Opt for a light color; this will help prevent the ends where the ribbon will be threaded from showing. You can also choose one that matches the ribbon.

πŸ‘‰ If you plan to make a flower crown to wear on the back of your head, be sure to get some 2mm diameter aluminum wire that matches your ribbon to secure it on your crown.

An artificial crown to serve as a model (optional)

It’s not mandatory, but it will make it easier to measure your head and allow you to estimate the amount of flowers you’d like to use in your crown to achieve the desired effect.

To get one, feel free to check out our catalog of artificial flower crowns, available directly on our online store.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Make Your Wreath

To create this crown, we will refer to this video, which showcases a floral tiara made with fresh flowers. The technique is the same for dried flowers and all other greenery.

Here are the detailed steps.

Step 1: Prepare Your Equipment and Plants

Clean your workspace so you have a neat and well-lit surface. Trim the stems of your flowers to about 1.5 inches long. Sort them by variety in front of you.

Step 2: Prepare Your Structure

Build your structure by cutting a piece of aluminum wire that measures three-quarters of the circumference of your head. Make a small loop about one centimeter in diameter at both ends of the wire. Then, take a piece of ribbon and insert it into one of the ends, tie a knot, and secure it using Floratape.

πŸ‘‰ In the video tutorial, the second ribbon is attached from the start. I recommend attaching it at the end instead so that it doesn’t get in your way while arranging the flowers.

Step 3: Begin Assembly

Starting at the end of the aluminum wire, use Floratape to attach the first flowers, which you should have gathered into a small bouquet beforehand. To securely hold each flower in place, wrap the tape around the stems until you reach about one centimeter past the end of the stems.

To make this step easier, you can cut small strips of tape about 2 to 4 inches long, which you will use one by one to secure each bouquet. The Floratape should be positioned at an angle to avoid thick areas and needs to be stretched to stick properly.

➑️ Make sure to place the flowers on only one side: the adhesive and structure should be visible on the side that will be applied to your head.

πŸ‘‰ Once you master securing plants with adhesive tape strips, you can try keeping the tape continuous from start to finish, wrapping it around the structure while attaching the bundles as you go. This technique, used by professionals, is much faster to execute, although it is a bit more complex.

Step 4: Keep Going and Finalize the Blooming

Next, attach each small bouquet of flowers one by one to the aluminum wire. Continue along the entire structure, alternating the colors and types of greenery.

If you’re creating a crown to highlight your face, feel free to increase the volume in the area that will rest on your forehead.

Step 5: Create the Attachment with the Ribbon

Once the crown is assembled, arch the structure to give it its final shape.

Next, place the ribbon in the second loop, the one where you haven’t attached a ribbon at the start. You can then position your crown on your head and secure it by tying the ribbon to tighten both ends.

πŸ‘‰ If your crown is intended to be placed on the back of your head, on hair styled in a bun or a braid, the process is a bit different:

  • Once the flowers are secured and the arch structure is in place, hold one end of the ribbon against the structure at one of the loops.
  • Wrap the ribbon by inserting it through the loop, then take a thinner piece of aluminum wire and wrap it around the loop to secure the ribbon to the structure.
  • Place the crown on top of your hairstyle, level with your ears.
  • Drape the ribbon across your forehead. You might choose lace for a more elegant look.
  • As before, secure the other end of the ribbon on the other loop of the structure and wrap an aluminum wire around it to keep it in place.
  • Finally, tuck the ribbon into the remaining loop to hide it and trim any excess ribbon if necessary.

How to Preserve and Wear Your Crown?

Ideally, your crown should be made on the day you plan to wear it. Since the flowers used in the crown are not hydrated, they shouldn’t be exposed to heat for too long to avoid wilting.

If that’s not possible, you can make it the night before and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator until you’re ready to take it out.

πŸ›‘ Attention, if your crown has exotic flowers, do not expose it to cold temperatures: it will cause the flowers to deteriorate irreversibly.

πŸ‘‰ If you plan to wear your crown for a special occasion, like a wedding, I recommend making one a little while beforehand to practice and get comfortable with the assembly technique.

In addition, if you’d like to try on a flower crown before making a decision, or if you’d prefer to have a backup crown just in case, you can purchase an artificial flower crown. Interested?
