Do you want to learn how to wrap a gift around a potted plant, whether it’s flowering or not? Did you pick some flowers from your garden and want to wrap them up to give as a gift?
I will help you.
As a florist, packaging the plants is a crucial part of my job. It not only serves to showcase them but also protects them until they are presented as gifts.
Today, I’m sharing my pro tips and tricks for creating beautiful packaging without breaking the bank.
To wrap your gift, whether it’s a bouquet or a flower pot, you’ll need: wrapping paper, ribbon, scissors, a stapler, and a pair of scissors. For the bouquet, fold a large rectangle of paper in half diagonally. Place the bouquet at the center of the resulting shape, fold the sides toward the bouquet, and then secure it all with ribbon at the stems. For the plant, place the pot on a large square of paper and raise the paper along the sides of the pot, folding it in an accordion style. Secure everything with staples and your decorative ribbon.

How to Wrap a Bouquet of Flowers?
If you want to wrap a bouquet of flowers that you’ve picked yourself, or if you want to make a nicer package for flowers you’ve bought from the supermarket, there’s a very simple technique that I will outline for you in the following paragraphs.
The Necessary Equipment
To create your packaging, you will need very few materials. However, it is essential to plan for the following:
- A paper that serves as the packaging, for example:
- A pair of scissors
- Some tape
- A stapler
- Something to make a tie (at least 50 centimeters): fabric strip, ribbon, raffia, string…
The Pro Technique
Here are the steps to follow for creating your packaging:
- Place your wrapping paper on your table. You need to cut out a rectangle that:
- The length should be approximately the height of your bouquet plus 8 inches.
- The width should be about half of the length.
➡️ For example, for a bouquet of roses that is 24 inches tall, cut a piece of paper that is about 32 inches (24 + 8 inches) by 16 inches (32 divided by 2).
- Position the rectangle of paper so that the longer side is facing you and the shorter sides are on the sides, as shown in the diagram below. Then, fold along the dashed line, which is located about 2/3 of the way down each side:
- Place the bouquet in the center of the fold you created, diagonally, with the stems pointing down to the left.
- Fold the flaps on the left and right sides of the bouquet in front of it.
- Secure everything in place with one or more staples.
- Wrap a tie around the stems and paper, about 3 centimeters from the base of the wrapping, and tie it securely to hold everything together.
👉 Be sure to wrap your flowers just before you leave to prevent any condensation, which could damage the leaves and stems.

How to Wrap a Flower Pot?
Here are the step-by-step instructions to follow:
- Dry your pot. The bottom should not be wet, especially if you’re using kraft paper.
👉 If you’re having trouble drying it properly, place a layer of waterproof plastic wrap under the pot. Even a plastic bag will work; it won’t be visible once the packaging is complete!
- Cut a large square of paper. Here are the approximate dimensions to consider based on the diameter of your pot:
- 3 inches: square with 12 inches on each side
- 5 – 5.5 inches: square with 20 inches on each side
- 7 – 8 inches: square with 28 inches on each side
- 10 – 11 inches: square with 40 inches on each side
- Place your flower pot on the paper, at the location indicated in the diagram below:

- Next, lift the paper along the sides of the pot, folding it in a zigzag manner. If necessary, especially if the paper is stiff, use staples to secure the zigzag folds.
- Finally, secure the paper with a tie wrapped around the trunk or stems, as low as possible.
- If necessary, trim the paper to ensure a cohesive look. The back should be taller than the front.
👉 If you have transparent paper and cardstock, you can create a fold using two squares, one of each type of paper, which you will attach together on one side. Place your pot in the center of the attachment, then lift the two flaps up and staple them together at the top. Next, secure the sides with staples by folding them in. This packaging is often used by florists and both showcases the plant and protects it from the cold and rain ❄️.
