You just learned about the passing of someone and you want to send flowers for their funeral? Are you wondering how to ensure you get a result that meets your expectations? What should you offer in memory of this loved one who has passed away?
You’re in the right place.
As a florist, sympathy arrangements are a significant part of my daily work. Regardless of how close my clients were to the deceased, I always make it a priority to help them choose the right flowers to express their condolences or pay tribute to their loved one.
That’s why today, I’m offering a guide for those who are looking for tips on how to send flowers for a funeral.
To send flowers for a funeral that is taking place near you, you can first visit a local florist to order a bouquet and have it delivered. If you live far from the location of the services, you can also order online by calling a local florist directly or by using a floral delivery service website (like Interflora, Florajet, etc.). Lastly, to support the loved ones of the deceased and pay tribute to them, you may also have a preserved rose delivered directly to the family, which will serve as an everlasting memory of the departed.

When You Visit Your Florist
Can’t make it to a funeral happening nearby? The easiest solution is probably to call a florist. In the following paragraphs, learn how to make your selection and what to keep in mind.
How to Arrange Flower Delivery for a Funeral?
If the funeral is held near you, flowers can be delivered directly by a florist. Otherwise, the florist can also use a floral relay service, such as Interflora or Florajet: I will provide more details about this process in the second part of this article.
To have flowers delivered for a funeral by your florist, I recommend visiting your local florist, if possible, at least 24 to 48 hours before the service, to ensure that you have the floral selection you desire.
Once the flowers and the type of arrangement have been chosen, the florist will need:
- the last name of the deceased,
- the exact date and location of the ceremony,
- your name and phone number, so you can be contacted in case of any issues, and possibly to send you a photograph of the arrangement created.
👉 Before you visit your florist, consider writing a short sympathy message on a card to accompany the bouquet. This will let the loved ones of the deceased know that you are thinking of them during this difficult time.
What Flowers to Choose for Funerals?
Choosing flowers for a funeral can be a challenging task: you may not always know what the deceased person liked, and you definitely want to avoid any missteps. Here are some tips to help you: of course, these are just general guidelines, and you can certainly choose something that better reflects the individual you knew, if that’s what you prefer.
For the Passing of an Elderly Man
The floral arrangements created in memory of a gentleman are characterized by the predominance of warm colors: red, orange, yellow, and a touch of white. It’s also possible to choose a combination of dark blue and white, which will have a more solemn feel.
In Memory of an Elderly Woman
To pay tribute to a distinguished lady, it’s traditional to choose a blend of pink and purple hues, in varying shades, paired with a touch of white. It’s also possible to create a slight contrast by adding cream-colored flowers, which will add softness to the overall arrangement.
For a Tragic Death or the Funeral of a Younger Person
If the person who passed away was not very old, I recommend using the colors mentioned in the previous lines, adding more white, and avoiding overly bright colors. Pastel tones are quite suitable in these circumstances.
If the death occurred under tragic circumstances or involved a very young person, especially a child, pure white is the appropriate color to support the family during this difficult time.
For Someone We Didn’t Know Well
If you’re unsure or didn’t have a close relationship with the deceased, you might opt for a blend of green and white, perhaps with a few subtle touches of cream. This is perfectly suitable in a professional setting, for instance, or for the parent of a friend.
What type of floral arrangement should be made for a funeral?
This choice will primarily be determined by two factors:
- your budget,
- your relationship with the deceased and their family.
Traditionally, the main pieces such as a large tripod crown, a casket top, a heart, or a cross are reserved for the closest family members: children, the spouse, grandchildren, and siblings.
If you have a budget of around 60 euros or more, you can have a lovely floral cushion made or a plant arrangement. Otherwise, you can choose a bouquet with a water bubble or a small flowering plant.
Through a Floral Transmission Chain
Do you want to have flowers delivered for a ceremony that’s taking place far from your home? You can use a floral delivery service. Learn more about it in the following lines.
How to Send Flowers for a Funeral Through a Delivery Service
You have two options:
- Visit a partner florist from a delivery service (like Interflora, Florajet, 123 Flowers, l’Agitateur Floral, Sessile…) and select your bouquet with their assistance. The florist will handle the order and ensure it is sent to another professional near the delivery location.
- Order directly online from the website of a delivery service.
In both cases, you will also need the delivery information: the last name of the deceased, as well as the date, location, and exact time of the ceremony.
👉 You can place an order up until the day before the ceremony. If the ceremony is in the morning, I recommend that you place your order no later than the day before by noon to ensure it is processed on time.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of this solution?
Order fulfillment is really convenient for sending flowers quickly when you can’t make it to a ceremony far from home. It allows you to select a floral arrangement from a catalog, have it created, and add a message to it.
However, it is important to know that:
🔸 When using this type of service, a portion of the money you send will be taken by the company handling the transaction, while another part will be used for delivery. So, if you paid $50 for the delivery of a bouquet, you won’t receive a bouquet equivalent to what you could find for $50 at your local florist.
🔸 Sometimes, certain plants are not available: they can be replaced with others while still keeping the essence and colors of the chosen arrangement from the catalog.
🔸 Finally, some delivery services no longer rely on local florists and instead create bouquets directly to ship. If you place an order online, don’t be surprised if your bouquet arrives by postal mail.
👉 If you want to make sure you’re hiring a local florist and avoid any administrative fees, I recommend that you look for a florist in your area and reach out to them to see if it’s possible to place an order and pay remotely. Many professionals offer this service!
Sending a Forever Rose Directly to the Family in Memory
Have you learned of a passing and wish to show your support to the grieving family? Honoring the deceased with a symbolic gesture, such as a flower that can be kept in memory of them? If so, an eternal rose might be just what you’re looking for.
Why Give an Everlasting Rose to Honor a Deceased Loved One?
Eternal roses, also known as stabilized flowers, are real roses that have had their sap replaced with a natural preserving agent: glycerin. This process allows them to maintain the appearance of a fresh rose for years.
In addition to being beautiful, they hold a powerful symbolism: giving an eternal rose in memory of a loved one signifies that they will never be forgotten and that their memory will always be cherished. This everlasting rose, which never wilts and remains beautiful, is reflective of the love we will continue to feel for the departed person forever.
👉 An everlasting rose can serve as a symbol to help navigate the grieving process. Its symbolism will provide comfort daily to those close to the deceased. It can also be placed on the grave, but it may not last as long due to outdoor weather conditions.
Which Color of Eternal Rose to Choose?
Everlasting roses come in a variety of shades. For a funeral, you might choose a rose:
- black, to signify your mourning and sadness,
- white, in memory of the deceased,
- colorful, for instance, in the favorite color of the departed.
Where to Buy This Type of Roses?
Preserved roses under a glass dome may not always be available at local florists since they are not considered “traditional” flowers. If you’re interested in this beautiful tribute, I invite you to explore our online store for preserved roses under glass domes. You can have your rose delivered directly to the loved ones of the deceased or have it sent to yourself to gift later. In either case, shipping is free, and if needed, our customer service is here to assist you!
I hope this article has helped you find a suitable option for sending flowers for a funeral, to appropriately honor a loved one who has passed away.
